Bill de Blasio will probably drop out of the 2020 race soon, and then he’ll have a choice to make: Recommit himself to running New York City, or spend his years “frittering around,” as one aide put it?

More than 400,000 New Yorkers are still counting on de Blasio to make public housing habitable, a task the city estimates will require $32 billion it doesn’t have.

"The mayor has worked to deliver for New Yorkers every single day of this administration and that will continue until its last," she said in a statement. "He’s consistently worked to improve our education system, the relationship between the police and community they serve, and access to mental health services, and has led the way on fighting and preparing for global warming."

John Lindsay was the last New York City mayor to run for president while still in City Hall. Like de Blasio, his local controversies trailed him around the country. A New York expatriate had a banner flownFormer Brooklyn Democratic boss Meade Espositomocked Lindsay's presidential run, urging him to suspend his campaign. "Come back, little Sheba," he said.

“Lindsay actually did care about the city and running the city and being mayor of the city,” Cannato said. “I can’t imagine de Blasio will come back and deal with the nitty gritty of how to deal with traffic and schools. Lindsay, for whatever his flaws, he and his aides were interested in urban affairs.”
