We are now at the point where many are asking if the benefits of AI outweigh its potential dangers.
Artificial Intelligence is a computer performing a task such that if a human did that task we would say that it involved intelligence.
We currently see many uses of this “deep learning” branch of AI, from Alexa recognizing our queries to self-driving cars. And there will be many more to come. While these applications are very impressive, they bear no resemblance to general human intelligence. Deep fakes and other instruments of confusion and propaganda will proliferate. Deep fakes are exemplified by a realistic video of someone making a speech that is totally computer generated, a speech that person never made. We already have a huge problem with mis/disinformation, and this adds a new dimension to it. AI can also be used to spread propaganda across social media.
This AI arms race is already developing among nations. A huge concern is that an unfriendly country might make a giant leap in the field and thereby gain a determining advantage in the military or economic realm. We might like to hit the pause button on AI development, but not everyone will do so.
