The group, which included Dothan mayor Mark Saliba, also celebrated a victory achieved last year with the passage of Aniah’s Law, which gives judges broader discretion to deny bail.
Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson, who concerned the first of these quarterly get-togethers in 2014, said the mayors are finalizing their 2023 legislative agenda.
Although the group has no specific proposals ready to roll out, the mayors said the topics are clear – improving public safety and creating jobs. Stimpson pointed to devices that make semi-automatic pistols into machine guns. The so-called Glock switches illegal under federal law, but not state law. Initially, the so-called Big 10 mayors were five – the leaders of Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa. It later expanded to include the 10 most populous cities.
