“Customers will not notice a change,” he says of the popular shops in the island’s downtown and Montclair Village.
Whether you “made $500,000 before the pandemic and now you make half that or you just walked in off the street,” Chambers says the important thing is “putting down our phones, breaking bread and opening a bottle.” Chambers is also keeping all of the current staff at both locations, in downtown Alameda and the Oakland hills’ Montclair Village. “Customers will not notice a change,” says Chambers.
After his Sideways experience and licensing agreement ended, Chambers decided to continue in the wine club business but wasn’t sure what to call his new venture. A friend who also happens to be a San Francisco State University marketing professor suggested her brand marketing grad students research a name.
Outgoing Farmstead owner Jeff Diamond, who along with wife Carol Huntington has run the Alameda and Montclair stores since 2003 and 2008, respectively, has always approached operating a fine wine-and-cheese shop as an educational experience for customers, no matter what their level knowledge is of artisanal cheeses or fine wines.
Armed with that knowledge, Diamond and Berkeley public school teacher Huntington picked Alameda as the location for their first store in part because it would be the first specialty foods store on the island.
