Latin percussionist Javier Navarrette will open the second annual set of events, which will last into October this year.
Established in 2017 with a vision to create a performing arts center fine enough to attract regional, national and international artists, Seiwald joined forces with artistic advisor Frederica von Stade, whose stellar operatic career includes appearing with companies such as San Francisco Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago and performing at Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Paris Opera and more.
Returning for a second, jubilant year, Radium Runway in 2023 boasts an expanded lineup of artists, including award-winning flutist and composer Elena Pinderhughes; Latin percussionist Javier Navarrette & His Socially Distant Friends; the team of composer/pianist JooWan Kim and Unity Lewis with their 25-piece hip-hop orchestra, Ensemble Mik Nawooj; and Oakland-based dance company Turf Inc.
Seiwald said last year’s inaugural series attracted more than 1,500 visitors despite its small-scale, three-day timespan. Asked about some of the artists in the series curated by Radium Presents board member and West End Arts District Executive Director Tara Pilbrow, Seiwald says the focus was on musical acts with manageable staging requirements. The team hopes to bring more theater and dance programs and add co-produced events to the series in upcoming years. He is particularly excited about connections underscoring the viability and interest from the local community.
