Archaeologists went looking for the Alamo's south wall. Instead, they found a soda can.
Archaeologists with the Alamo and Raba Kistner have been carefully photographing, mapping and documenting information on the soil layers at each unit during a six-week excavation.A six-week archaeological excavation at the Alamo has revealed ceramics from the Spanish colonial era and a vintage 1970s soda can, but no remnants of the south wall of the mission-fort.
One of the primary goals of the six-week dig in Alamo Plaza has been to locate any portions of the mission walls that need to be preserved and possibly publicly displayed as part of an outdoor main gate exhibit set to open later this year. Earlier this month, officials reported finding ceramics from the Spanish colonial period in the third excavation unit, including Guanajuato Polychrome , initially produced in Guanajuato, Mexico, and commonly found at similar historic sites along the San Antonio River.
