Alaska's Fat Bear Week is over, but Tahoe's bears are still in the process of beefing up — and increasing their interactions with humans in the process.
On Tuesday, a female brown bear named Grazer became the winner of the ninth annual “Fat Bear Week” at Alaska’s Katmai National Park & Preserve, which puts the park’s known bears into a bracket-style competition voted on by the public. Grazer beat out another almost-as-round bear, with the intimidating name of “Chunk,” by more than 80,000 votes.
“If Tahoe had grizzly bears and they could enter this contest, our bears would easily win by a few hundred pounds, hands down,” she says. “We are not known for having skinny bears.” Unfortunately, increased bear-human interactions also means there’s a greater chance of bear-vehicle collisions around the lake during this time of year.
