Disney’s animated classic Alice in Wonderland is renowned for its trippy, surreal imagery, including the recurring motif of Alice growing – but there’s a deeper meaning to this particular psychedelic image. Based on the Alice books by Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland revolves around a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole and enters the fantasy world of Wonderland, where she meets such colorful characters as the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts.

After she goes through the door, she eats a cookie, which has the opposite effect of the shrinking potion and causes her to grow much larger than her original size.
Although Alice in Wonderland wasn’t initially a box office hit, its veiled references to hallucinogens made it popular among the drug culture. The Jefferson Airplane song “White Rabbit” , from their 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow, contains nods to Alice, the White Knight, the Red Queen, and a hookah-smoking caterpillar. Grace Slick’s iconic lyrics draw parallels between the events of Alice in Wonderland and the mind-bending hallucinatory effects of psychedelic drugs.
Alice's Growing Is A Metaphor For Adolescence One of the main themes in Alice in Wonderland is the inevitable loss of childhood innocence. Alice initially goes to Wonderland to escape from her increasingly mundane life. At first, it seems as though she can make the fun of her childhood last forever if she just stays in Wonderland. But, before long, the fast-approaching end of childhood rears its head. Alice’s literal “growing up” is a metaphor for adolescence and getting older.
Alice is resistant to her growth at first, but when she accepts it, she’s able to use her growth to her advantage. In the movie’s climactic sequence, she eats a mushroom so she can grow again and narrowly escape a death sentence from Disney’s most underrated villain the Queen of Hearts. This scene shows Alice embracing the power that the fantastical realm of Wonderland grants her.
