All the Light We Cannot See, Netflix's latest novel-to-screen adaption, makes some pretty big changes to its source material — and not for the better.
Spoilers ahead for both the show and book versions of All the Light We Cannot See, including the endings.
9 Werner's Discovery Of Marie-Laure Is Plagued By Violence In the novel, Werner, who studied radio technology, listens to the educational broadcasts sent out by Marie's great-uncle, the shell-shocked Etienne. Werner is able to trace the signal of Etienne's broadcast, but doesn't share that information with his squad. Netflix's miniseries, however, takes a more violent-ridden approach to Werner's discovery of Marie.
6 Werner's Friendship With Frederick Is Cut Miniseries director Shawn Levy has noted in several interviews that he and teleplay writer Steven Knight purposefully cut "deeply upsetting scenes" that appeared in the novel from their TV adaptation . While that's an understandable approach to scenes that would be harder to watch than read about, it also means some of the story's more poignant plot lines were axed.
3 Reinhold von Rumpel's Killer Changes Between The Book & Show In the series, Werner does his fair share of killing Nazis, including Schmidt and Captain Mueller — both of whom wind up dead because Werner wants to protect Marie and Etienne. That said, it makes some sense that the miniseries changes Reinhold von Rumpel's killer. In the novel, von Rumpel fights Werner, only to be killed by the young man.
