Hilltop grad Selena Serna, Mater Dei Catholic grad Christine Carey have the Coast Guard Academy in the thick of their conference softball race
In two weeks, the Hilltop High School softball standout will graduate, take a 30-day leave, then report to San Pedro and the Coast Guard’s newest ship — the USCGC Argus.
Serna, a second baseman, is hitting .355 with a pair of homers, 12 doubles and 23 RBIs for a team that is 26-8.She leads the team with 31 runs scored. “Coming to a Division III school, I didn’t expect much,” Carey said. “Most of our teammates had a chance to play at Division I schools, but chose to serve their country.Carey came to the Coast Guard Academy directly from high school.“That year gave me time to learn what the Coast Guard was all about,” Serna said. “It was a great experience.”“I want to work for the government,” Carey said.“And last summer, the Cadets took a trip to the Middle East,” Serna said.
