Lady Deer capture bi-district soccer championship with 3-0 win
Deer Park's Lily Colewell pursues the ball and a Summer Creek player during Thursday night's bi-district match at Abshier Stadium.From his vast experience, longtime soccer coach Jesse Saavedra knows if a team can withstand the opening 40 minutes of a brisk wind in his team’s face without any damage on the scoreboard, it means promising things for the second half.
“It’s hard. For whatever reason, the ball just doesn’t stay the way it’s supposed to. I think we did a really good job of holding them and not letting them score. We got one early and that kind of eased things off for us in the second half. We relaxed and started controlling the game. There was never a lot of danger,” Saavedra said.
“She kind of snuck in between. I believe our forward, Lily , just passed it through and they were asleep. She got inside position and with her right foot punched it in. If you fall asleep, that’s what’s going to happen. Anybody can do that,” Saavedra said. “She’s a very clever freshman. Hats off to number 3, Jaci Stokes, We man-marked her, we put two or three players on her. That was kind of our strategy. Everything goes through her,” Saavedra said.
