In a vote Wednesday, May 31, 2023, the Federal Trade Commission is ordering Amazon to pay more than $30 million in fines over privacy violations involving its voice assistant Alexa and its doorbell camera Ring. Amazon, the online retailer, is accused of violating the children's privacy law through its handling of children’s voice data.
The complaint also accuses Amazon of misleading parents. Amazon has agreed to pay $25 million to resolve the case. In addition to Free Time Unlimited on Alexa which offers children's audio books and voice-controlled games, stories, jokes, and educational tools. “They wanted to keep the data to improve its machine learning algorithms, so this is a classic case of a company focused on profits not so much on privacy,” said Jillson.
