E-commerce giant Amazon has pushed back against a new report claiming that the firm’s plastic waste impact grew by almost a third last year
Amazon does have a point. Oceana’s methodology, as criticized above, could be fairly described as speculative. The charity arrived at the figure of 599 million pounds of plastic waste by taking the estimated volume of plastic waste created by all e-commerce businesses in 2020 , and then assuming that Amazon’s plastic packaging footprint correlates with its market share .
Oceana, responding to Amazon’s response, stood by its claims. “Oceana is using the best publicly available data to estimate the company’s plastic packaging footprint ,” said Littlejohn. “We’ve asked Amazon to provide data directly and they have so far refused to do so. We’d welcome data from Amazon and call on them to quantify their plastic footprint.”
What we do know, however, is that Amazon is the largest e-trading company in the world, and that the sheer volume of plastic waste being produced by the global economy constitutes an environmental emergency. Some studies indicate that an average of 14% of all plastic waste enters waterways annually, while a statistic cited by the UN suggests at least 8 million tons of plastic waste are added to the ocean every year.
