James Burgh, a British politician whose writings in the 1760s were popular among the founders, used some colorful language to describe what happens to a religion that becomes favored by the state. Four years before the Bill of Rights, when the Anglican church was the state-sponsored religion of Virginia, James Madison argued against a bill to impose a tax to fund Christian teaching.
Another common view among our founders was that religious diversity was good for liberty because having many religious sects would serve as “checks and balances” against each others’ worst instincts.
