Travelers going through security check at William P. Hobby Airport Monday, March 20, 2023, in Houston.American Airlines pilots voted Monday to authorize a strike, but it would be rare for such an action to actually result in travel delays for passengers. Despite the vote, contract negotiations were ongoing and there remained additional hurdles pilots would need to clear before a walkout could happen.
The Allied Pilots Association union, headquartered in Fort Worth, represents 15,000 pilots with American Airlines. Of the members who voted, 99 percent were in favor of the strike. They have been demanding greater reliability and predictability related to their work schedules.Pilots Monday picketed at the airline's 10 major hubs, including the Dallas-Fort Worth airport.
"The APA membership has spoken. We will strike if necessary to secure the industry-leading contract that our pilots have earned and deserve – a contract that will position American Airlines for success," APA president Ed Sicher said in a statement."With more than 99 percent of participating pilots voting in favor of authorizing a strike, our pilots’ resolve is unmistakable. We will not be deterred from our goal of an industry-leading contract.
