Iowa native Bushra Ibnauf Sulieman was fatally stabbed this week in Sudan amid lawlessness unleashed by a power struggle between two generals

April 29, 2023 7:28 am ETthis month, Sudanese-American doctor Bushra Ibnauf Sulieman waived the promise of an escape to safety offered by his U.S. passport. Instead, Dr. Sulieman, a gastroenterologist and director of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Khartoum, stayed to look after his aging parents and patients at one of the city’s last functioning hospitals.

On Tuesday morning, Dr. Sulieman was stabbed in the chest and the neck during an apparent street robbery amid the desperation and lawlessness unleashed by a lethal battle for power between
