Ana Montes, a U.S. military intelligence officer convicted of spying for the Cuban government, was released from prison Friday after more than 20 years, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

For almost 17 years, Montes gathered secret U.S. government information and passed it on to intelligence officers in Havana. She disclosed the identities of at least four U.S.

“She is one of the most damaging spies the United States has ever found,” Michelle Van Cleave, national counterintelligence executive under President George W. Bush, told a“After 16 years of spying on behalf of Cuba, she compromised everything, virtually everything that we knew about Cuba and how we operated in Cuba and against Cuba. So the Cubans were well aware of everything that we knew about them and could use that to their advantage,” Van Cleave added.
