SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — It’s an annual tradition: Every spring, there are breakout players. And every spring, Giants manager Gabe Kapler, along with most of baseball, will remind you that they value spring stats less than a grain of salt. The task at hand, for internal team evaluators and informed observers, is to sort through the noise.
With more than half the Cactus League schedule in the books, Alex Cobb looks particularly locked in on the mound, while Michael Conforto has made a big first impression at the plate. But veteran spring performance matters even less, and it’s no secret the sizable roles expected of each player this season.
Of more interest are the players who you may or may not have heard of prior to this spring who are making a name for themselves.Got the nod in San Francisco’s spring opener, but has been at his best in his past two outings, including Sunday against the A’s. “Thatto Brown was nasty,” remarked one Giants hitter, watching from the clubhouse.
“He looks more physical than he has in years past,” manager Gabe Kapler said of Beck, 26. “Last year around this time, he didn’t really look like an option to make a huge impact at the major-league level in ’22. Now you’re really starting to see that he has a good chance to do so.”has also showed off an upper-90s fastball and a nasty splitfinger this spring.
“He looks great,” Kapler said. “Our goal for Hjelle is to keep him where he is and to build on what he’s already accomplished. This is a really good version of him and we’re trying to help him stay here.”
