Anchorage has gotten 41.1 inches of snow in the past 11 days at the National Weather Service's official measuring site on the west side of town.
The latest storm hit Anchorage shortly after Wednesday evening’s commute and snowfall stopped around 5 a.m. Thursday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Shaun Baines. The storm dumped 9 inches of snow at the weather service’s official measuring station in West Anchorage. The latest storm’s tally joins totals from major winter storms on Dec. 6 and Sunday, which saw Anchorage break a liquid precipitation record set in 1989.
Baines said snow totals from other Anchorage and Mat-Su locations were still pending Thursday morning, but forecasters expected the amounts to be on target at 6 to 12 inches overnight. The weather service warned of slippery roads Thursday morning. Between midnight and 8:30 a.m., Anchorage police got reports of 33 “vehicles in distress,” stuck in snow or ice, plus four non-injury collisions, according to police spokeswoman Renee Oistad. Police are urging drivers to clear snow from vehicles including headlights and taillights, leave extra space for stopping distance and allow additional driving time to reach their destinations.
Alaska State Troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said the Parks Highway was closed in both directions Thursday morning north of Trapper Creek, near Mile 133. Two commercial vehicles collided. Additional details were not immediately available. “At this point we’re not expecting the highway to be open until early this evening, due to the cleanup and the remediation happening at the scene,” McDaniel said.
