11th annual International Maheshwari and Rajasthani Convention a celebration of cultural diversity
“We try to include a philanthropic aspect to each IMRC convention for the youth,” said Sarika Malani, president of RAYS. “This year we asked members of RAYS and junior RAYS made holiday cards for the children at Texas Children’s Hospital.”Guests arrived dressed to the nines in traditional finery, silks and jewels. Shades of vibrant reds and yellows were popular.
“Maheshwari Mahasabha” — literally “great gathering of Maheshwaris.” It was established in 1983 and currently has nine chapters in the U.S. Guests of honor included Dr. Renu Khator, president of the University of Houston; Dr. Ruma Devi, an Indian national award-winning social worker; Shailesh Lodha, Indian actor and poet; Kartikeya Baldwa, CEO at Ixoreal Biomed Inc.; and Indian Consul General Aseem Mahajan.
“The entire convention moved from the hotel to a ranch, everyone was decked in cowboy attire showcasing Texan culture, we served TexMex cuisine,” said spokesperson Trusha Chandak. “The attendees travelled on 14 school buses; it was a unique and fun experience for all.”
