We chat with Malum co-writer & director Anthony DiBlasi and star Jessica Sula about the horror reimagining , the power of practical scares, and more:
Some jobs are more hellish than others, as seen in Malum. The film centers on a rookie police officer whose first shift is in a station on the verge of closing where her late dad used to work. As the night goes on, she finds herself the target of strange events that may make it her last shift.
Anthony DiBlasi & Jessica Sula Talk Malum Screen Rant: Anthony, I was a big fan of the original Last Shift, so I found the concept of reimagining it interesting right out of the gate. Jessica, you are obviously no stranger to the horror genre, but what was it about Malum that really spoke to you? Anthony DiBlasi: I think when we made the first film, we did it on a very shoestring budget, and inherently because of that, we had to leave stuff on the table.
Anthony DiBlasi: I was grateful that, when we got on a call, she had not watched it yet, because an instinct would probably be like, "Okay, this is a movie, let me watch the first one." But it probably would have changed things a lot. This was a single-camera movie, we wanted to be much more deliberate with the camera moves, and more traditional with the storytelling, we early on kind of approached it that way. We shot 2.1, which also our post team was kind of like, "Oh no, you shot it to 2.0, 2.1," which Hereditary shot and Northman. Some films are shooting like that, but it's not quite 1.85, it's not quite 2.0, it's something in between.
