Metal mania: Anthrax, Black Label Society team up for San Antonio concert at Boeing Center
“I met the Anthrax fellas on the ‘No Rest for the Wicked’ tour with Ozzy when they opened for us back in ’88, ’89,” Wylde said in a phone interview. “We’ve known each other forever, and it just seemed like it would be cool if we went out together, so here we are having a blast.”
“We had never done a full-blown arena tour in the states at that point, so getting that call from the Ozzy camp was mindblowing,” he said. “We were out there playing to giant crowds, the record was doing great and we got to see Ozzy every night. We’ve been friends with Zakk ever since.” In the late 1980s, Anthrax successfully pioneered the merger of heavy metal and rap music, which helped usher in the 1990s’ prolific rap-rock and nu-metal movements. Accolades aside, Ian still carries a short bucket list.
Wylde, now 56 and long recognized as one of heavy metal’s premier guitarists, also has had a momentous career. Since earning his spot with Ozzy at age 19, Wylde has amassed a worldwide audience on the strength of 11 Sabbath-meets-Skynyrd-style Black Label Society albums, including the latest, “Doom Crew Inc.”
