A predicted Republican “red wave” never materialized despite pre-election polls that pointed to strong gains. Here’s why, according to exit polls.
Many Democrats and independents voted partly to show their disapproval of former President Donald Trump, exit polls show.
Typically independents break against the president’s party in a mid-term election, especially when the president is deeply unpopular. Only 44% of voters approved of Joe Biden as president. Trump loomed large in the election. Some 28% of voters said their vote was meant to show their opposition to Trump. Only 16% said their vote was a show of support.
Mehmet Oz lost a close Senate race in Pennsylvania. Blake Masters was on the verge of losing in Arizona. And Herschel Walker was trailing slightly in Georgia. Several more viable Republican candidates chose not to run because they were opposed by Trump. Some 61% of voters said they were dissatisfied or angry about the Supreme Court decision, including more than one-quarter of Republicans. The issue likely cost the GOP in some close House contests, political analysts say.
