Artisan Manalastas, 36, accepted a 21-year prison term in the killing of Andrew Williams.

OAKLAND — An Antioch man has accepted a plea deal and a 21-year prison term in the 2017 killing of a man who the defense says was his lifelong friend, court records show.

Artisan Manalastas, 36, pleaded no contest to manslaughter and will be eligible for a 15 percent sentence reduction, with good behavior. He receives credit for the past five years he has spent in Santa Rita Jail awaiting resolution in his case., a resident of San Pablo and Oakland, on June 4 of that year. Prosecutors alleged that Williams and Manalastas were in the same car when the shooting occurred, around 3:20 a.m.

Even as Manalastas accepted a manslaughter conviction, his attorney, Seth Morris, wrote in court records that he believes it was a case of lawful self-defense. Morris said Manalastas has prior convictions and was not entirely truthful with police, which raised enough risk that he wanted to avoid a life sentence. The plea deal will help Manalastas get back to his two daughters relatively soon, he wrote.

In Manalastas’ preliminary hearing, prosecutors pointed to inconsistent statements Manalastas made after voluntarily appearing at an Oakland police station to talk about the case. They argued he lied about taking BART that night, and later said he slept on a bench in Oakland, because he wanted to distance himself from the car used in the homicide.
