Antioch also will look at developing an internship program that all departments could use.

The Antioch City Council has given the go-ahead to add up to five part-time secretaries to provide administrative help for council members.

The new positions were approved on a split vote, with Councilmembers Mike Barbanica and Lori Ogorchock dissenting. Both have said in the past they do not think the city should hire for the positions – each will cost $15,500 to $22,389 annually – but rather were interested in the possibility of adding interns.

Human Resources Director Ana Cortez said both options come with pros and cons, and the city currently does not have an internship program so the staff must first work on developing it if the council chooses to create one. The program would also benefit various city departments instead of just the council members.

Whichever direction the city goes, residents who spoke at the meeting supported bringing on additional administrative help for council members. Cortez said a city director would make the request and it would be up to that director to assign a mentor while human resources would oversee the program as a whole.
