Paxlovid is a pill that is taken for 5 days and it must be started within 5 days of testing positive for COVID-19. It can reduce the risk of hospitalization and death by up to 88% when taken within 5 days of symptoms starting.

, first deputy commissioner and chief equity officer for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, discussed the reasons why his department is so focused on antiviral medications generally and Paxlovid specifically. According to Easterling, Paxlovid is a pill that is taken for 5 days and it must be started within 5 days of testing positive for COVID-19. It is encouraged for those over 65, individuals who have diabetes, and those who are obese.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to impact heavily on Black communities, especially Black workers in industries [such as] warehouse delivery or transportation that require close frequent contact with the public. Boosters are essential for protecting against the emerging variants of the coronavirus; however, while first and second dose vaccine rates are high overall, the vaccine booster rates in New York are only hovering around 50% in the general population.
