Apple, Alphabet, Dell, Microsoft, and Tesla sued by 14 Congolese families for “knowingly benefitting” from the “cruel” use of children as young as 6 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to mine cobalt
: Apple, Alphabet, Dell, Microsoft and Tesla are being sued by 14 Congolese families for “knowingly benefitting” from the “cruel” use of children as young as six in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
The plaintiffs are seeking damages for forced child labor, negligent supervision and “intentional infliction” of emotional distress. They say that the victims carried out “backbreaking” work and risked serious injury or death, to earn up to $3 a day. The case is being brought in the US to avoid a “notoriously corrupt” judicial system in the DRC, and because there is no law that would enable the plaintiffs to seek damages against the major players that operate abroad, the IRA said.
