Lillian Kuri, an architect, arts advocate, daughter of Lebanese immigrants, and one of the most respected civic leaders in Northeast Ohio, will design the future of the Cleveland Foundation as its president and CEO.

Before her career at the foundation, Kuri worked as a project coordinator at Harvard University, a city planner in Boston and Cleveland, and as executive director of the nonprofit Cleveland Public Art, a predecessor of LAND Studio. Richard promoted Kuri to higher and higher levels of responsibility during her 18 years at the foundation. After starting in a two-year, full-time consulting position, she rose to become program director for arts, architecture, and urban design; vice president for strategic initiatives; senior vice president for strategy; and executive vice president and COO, reporting directly to Richard.
In a like manner, she said, the foundation’s move to Hough is intended to highlight the importance of uplifting struggling neighborhoods after decades of civic attention focused on downtown. “You have to collaborate to build a building — with engineers, with builders, with designers, with community,’’ she said. “It is a collaborative sport. And philanthropy is a collaborative sport.”Kuri said she formed her worldview growing up in Freedom Township, which straddles Interstate 80 and State Route 88, roughly halfway between Cleveland and Youngstown.
The youngest of three children, Kuri grew up hearing her parents speak Arabic at home. She also picked up some Portuguese during summer visits to Brazil, where she remembers being mesmerized by the country’s cultural diversity and embrace of modern design. While working on a postgraduate project in Beirut, she met architect Rafael Vinoly, who would later design theof the Cleveland Museum of Art, completed in 2013. In Beirut, Vinoly designed a reconstruction of the city’s public market after the bloody civil war that ravaged Lebanon from 1975 to 1990. For Kuri, it was an important lesson in the power of public space.
