Many of us see the headlines about cabin crew and pilots voting to take strike action and are quick to think of our summer holidays being ruined. Being a flight attendant or cabin crew used to be considered by most as being the dream job. But what is the average flight attendant pay and is it fair?

Share to twitterMany of us see the headlines about cabin crew and pilots voting to take strike action and we are quick to think of our summer holidays being ruined. Ultimately, the most disruptive of the peak time strikes are usually averted, but they certainly get the airlines’ attention. So who is right? The airlines or the crew and their unions?Ask the 226 passengers on the Ural Airlines flight this week that had to make an emergency landing in a cornfield.

A Ural Airlines A321 that made an emergency landing in a cornfield outside Moscow this week after a dual bird strikeDoubling down on this, the next United CEO Glenn Tilton declared the airline bankrupt to push through changes. Staff took a forced pay cut of up to 40%, mirrored with longer working hours. For example on a Boeing 757, flight attendant numbers were cut from 5 to 4. This meant more hours and less pay but the same amount of passengers.

Cabin Crew do far more than just serve food and drinks. They are trained to keep every passenger safeWhat happened? In short, airlines began to actually be run like streamlined businesses as consolidation took place in the industry. Shareholders prioritised necessary returns over the glorified days of flying. Almost anything that can go wrong for an airline, could indeed go wrong and so the aviation sector began to protect itself and cut back.

When there is a delay, it’s of course the flight attendants fault. TV screen broken, flight attendants fault. Ran out of your meal choice? Of course, you guessed it, that must have been the flight attendants fault as well, because they must have also personally stocked the aircraft surely right? The flight attendant is the front and face of the airline. Likely an airline that the cabin crew themselves are also disgruntled with. Many major airlines have mistreated crew for years.
