Are your lunch habits at work healthy?
It feels like we used to take time to step away from our desks more often at work to eat lunch. Maybe we’d meet coworkers in a break room or cafeteria, but if we were really lucky, we’d go offsite for something good. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to simply eat at our desks in order to keep working.
Of the survey’s respondents, almost nine out of ten brought a lunch they had prepared at home at least some of the time. Women were significantly more likely to bring their own lunch to work as compared to men . Interestingly, despite having more access to on-site options, employees under 40 were more likely to bring a prepared lunch than those aged 40 and over .
It seems that self-comforting through food is a more popular approach to managing stress during the workday than other strategies such as talking to a friend or colleague , getting physically active or doing deep breathing/meditation . It’s hard to eat a healthy meal if you don’t have access to healthy options. Again, bringing a lunch from home is affordable and allows employees to have more control over what they eat, but workers want better on-site choices, too.
