Urban Kitchen Group's globally-themed restaurant opened in December 2021 in the newly remodeled museum's lobby
Artifact at Mingei, the globally inspired museum that opened in the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park 18 months ago, joined the California Michelin Guide of restaurants on Tuesday morning.
The Michelin Guide, which recognizes excellence in restaurants worldwide, added 10 California restaurants to its guide Tuesday morning. Mingei is the only San Diego County entry. The rest are in Orange and Los Angeles counties. Besides being added to the Michelin Guide website as recommended spots to eat, these 10 restaurants are now eligible to be elevated to higher status later this year with a Michelin Bib Gourmand or Michelin Star award.
The first course of the Artifact restaurant’s Maghreb dinner included three separate dishes of Northwest African-inspired food. The restaurant is in the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park.Artifact debuted in December 2021 in the Mingei lobby, which reopened in summer 2021 following a three-year, $55 million renovation. The sleek and modern bistro and bar is run by Tracy Borkum’s Urban Kitchen Group , best known for her popular Cucina Urbana and Cucina Enoteca restaurants.
In its recognition of Artifact, an anonymous Michelin inspector wrote: “The culinary offerings are proudly eclectic and international, ranging from carefully pleated rock shrimp gyoza with a yuzu-flavored dashi, to lamb kibbeh with quinoa tabbouleh. Plant-based options, like Thai green curry with sweet potato and crispy noodles, are clearly no afterthought, and desserts like cardamom tapioca with saffron granita hold their own.
Other restaurants added to the California guide Tuesday are Cento Pasta Bar, Dunsmoor, Juliet and Villa’s Tacos in Los Angeles; Cobi’s and Dear Jane’s in Santa Monica; Kaori Sushi, Poppy & Seed and Taira Sushi & Sake in Orange County.A decorative dumpling dish at the newly opened Artifact at Mingei restaurant in Balboa Park.
