The forecast includes a small chance for a tornado tonight, according to the National Weather Service.
Lightning flashes in the sky beyond Mission City Church near NW Military Highway on April 20, 2023. More lightning and thunderstorms are predicted in the coming days.More rain is expected today in San Antonio, and it should last through Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service. There's also a chance over the next few days that any storm that hits the area will turn severe, said Bob Fogarty, a meteorologist with the NWS in New Braunfels.
"Tomorrow night, a cold front comes through, looking like after midnight in the San Antonio area," Fogarty said."Could be showers and thunderstorms ahead of it during the period of warm air, in the evening and nighttime there are chances of precipitation. Both days there's a chance the storms could be strong or severe. It's a marginal risk for today, lowest on the scale.
The strongest threat for severe weather in the San Antonio area Tuesday is hail at night, although strong winds may also be present. As far as rainfall totals, Fogarty said, it's not looking like a heavy rain event. That could change, though, and a shower could bring heavy rain for a short period of time and drop an inch or two of rainfall.
"It's not going to be a flood event," Fogarty said."It could be heavy for a short amount of time, and we could get a few of those, rather than a period of sustained heavy rain." Over the next few days, for any event outdoors at night, lightning and severe weather could be an issue, Fogarty said. Fiesta events with tents and canopies may have to deal with strong winds that could knock those covers down, and even if the storm isn't directly overhead, lightning can still reach as far as 10 miles away.
