Local and county officials toured the landslide site on Thursday, July 13, and said help is on the way.
It’s been about a week since some Peartree Lane residents noticed odd things happening near their residences. New cracks in driveways, water running in unusual places and — in one instance — an unusually high utility bill.that sent nearly a dozen homes down a Rolling Hills Estates ravine has not yet been determined, city officials from this tiny town of 8,000 know one thing for sure:“This is unprecedented,” said Councilmember Frank Zerunyan.
“Time is going to be a tricky thing to manage through all this,” McGowan said. “But we will move as fast as we possibly can.”, which the City Council approved this week, cleared the way for county services. Next, the county will summon the state, according to Hanh’s spokesperson, Liz Opendahl. Both Hanh and Opendahl said the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services was scheduled to do an assessment of the Peartree landslide area on Friday.
The American Red Cross, for its part, will begin providing meals to the displaced residents in temporary hotel accommodations on Saturday, July 15, and will continue doing so for the next two weeks, according to a city update on Thursday evening. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, meanwhile, has been in contact with the families of students in the affected area and will provide accommodations to alleviate any potential school or enrollment stress.
Forrester, though, said she is not worried about her place sliding. Her unit doesn’t face the canyon. Besides, she said, she’s lived there since 1973 and her place survived the 1993 Northridge earthquake. After the “big one,” Forrester said, she noticed just one tiny crack. Indeed, new cracks were the impetus for LA County firefighters to evacuate the Peartree Lane residents and red-tag buildings initially, Marrone said during the impromptu press conference Thursday.
