Many Houston-area schools, particularly high schools, saw standardized test scores drop...
Love Elementary in the Heights was among those able to rebound. The Pre-K through fifth-grade campus saw its letter grade jump to a B from D in 2019. It also made gains in the state accountability ranking system, jumping to an A from a C.Brenda Muñoz, a teacher specialist at Love, said several factors played into the school’s improvement. One was working closely with intervention specialists, some of whom were teachers who came out of retirement to work to catch up small groups of students.
However, the school also wanted to expand to attract more students and to be better serve those who may struggle to learn in two languages. They opened an English-only class last school year for pre-k and kindergarten. This academic year, it was offered up to first grade. Children at Risk, a Houston-based education advocacy and research nonprofit, uses state standardized math and reading test scores, as well as college readiness metrics, to rate every public school in Texas. The rankings are based on student achievement, year-over-year growth and performance relative to poverty levels.
In 2021, the nonprofit decided not award letter grades because STAR tests were optional and the TEA also was not giving letter grades. Instead, they made lists of the most pandemic “resilient” schools and “red flag” schools based off what data was available. Some educators have brought into question how helpful the rankings truly are. Garrett Reed, who teaches English as a second language at Wisdom High School, said it doesn’t account for the struggles immigrant and refugee students face.
