In a new report, Innovation Ohio attributes at least part of the problem for Ohio Democrats to “missing voters,” or inactive voters and voting-age adults who are unregistered.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio has gone from a state that ex-President Barack Obama won twice to one that’s that’s increasingly off the radar of national Democrats, thanks to a years-long string of Republican election wins.
Released ahead of the 2024 elections, when Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown will stand for reelection, the report recommends making “targeted” efforts to engage these unregistered and inactive voters. Why do you think there was voter-drop off in from 2018 to 2022, and why do you think it was particularly concentrated in urban areas?
We’ve also had a rollback of early voting hours, and we now have strict voter ID. I think all those things chip away a the process and don’t encourage people to participate. I do think though in terms of looking at this through a generational lens, I was raised in my house with my grandparents. And so the lessons and the stories I was told are very different than some of my friends who were with their parents at a much younger age.
So I think as we reimagine voter participation there are a number of factors that have to come into play. One, we know that poll workers often are older. We have to start retraining and energizing younger people to participate in the process.
