Geography should not determine availability of healthcare.
PennLive Letters to the EditorNPs are nurses that have had further education to become a healthcare provider, and we have been around since 1965. We are not doctors or physician assistants, although we may hold a doctorate level degree. State laws and regulations determine how we care for you.
Twenty-seven states have Full Practice Authority which means that NPs can open a clinic without finding a physician to sign an agreement “allowing” us to practice. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania is not one of these states. Simply explained, if my collaborating physician decides to leave or retire, not only do the physician’s patients lose a provider, but so do patients assigned to me. Sound fair?
