The Associated Press, in an attempt to provoke fewer controversies, managed to stir up a new one.

It’s a minefield trying not to offend everyone.

On Thursday, the AP Stylebook — the style guide not just for the American news agency, but adhered to by several media outlets — issued a tweet. The fact that “the French” were included along with labels such as “the poor” and “the mentally ill” caused somewhat of an internet sensation, and led to widespread lampooning of the media service.

Even the French embassy in the U.S. joined in, jokingly renaming itself, “Embassy of Frenchness in the U.S.” A new tweet did not include “the French” as an example, but the AP did not specifically say whether it approves of the two words used together.
