NEW YORK — The Astros activated shortstop Jeremy Peña from the injured list on Sunday and, in a surprise move, optioned outfielder Chas McCormick to Class AAA Sugar Land.
Houston opted to keep infielder J.J. Matijevic over McCormick, signaling faith in Mauricio Dubón as the backup center fielder behind starter Jake Meyers. The Astros optioned Jose Siri to Class AAA on Friday to make room for Meyers' return from the injured list. Matijevic struck a mammoth solo home run off Yankees ace Gerrit Cole during the Astros' 3-0 win on Saturday. His only two major league hits are home runs.
