Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena chats with bench coach Joe Espada during batting practice before the start of an MLB game at Minute Maid Park on Saturday, May 21, 2022 in Houston. The Astros start three Gold Glove winners on an everyday basis. The team’s best defender remains in search of his first. Kyle Tucker finished as a finalist during each of the last two seasons, but continues to chase the elusive award becoming more realistic with each diving catch or accurate throw.
“I know that last year he was metrically one of the best right fielders in baseball and now I’m seeing that,” starter Justin Verlander said. “Almost every night he makes an excellent throw or makes a nice catch. He made two of them tonight … He’s been nothing short of excellent out there.” Most of Tucker’s value is still tied to his bat, but on a team littered with wonderful defenders, few have received as many chances — or acclaim — as him. Tucker entered Saturday’s game worth two outs above average, according to Baseball Savant. Among right fielders, only Avisail Garcia and Max Kepler were worth more.
“He works on getting his body in position to throw and he’s become very, very accurate with his throws,” manager Dusty Baker said. “When I first got here, he was kind of a work in progress, but now he’s one of the finer right fielders in baseball.”
