Astros insider: Lack of pop from right side continues in third straight loss
Houston Astros starting pitcher Framber Valdez pitches against the Detroit Tigers during the seventh inning of a Major League Baseball game on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, in Houston. The Astros are in dire need of power from a righthanded hitter, someone in this lineup to lessen the weight Yordan Alvarez is carrying on his broad shoulders. Off the bat, Alex Bregman believed he supplied all of it.
Bregman has taken residence in the Crawford Boxes since making his major league debut. Few know its crevices and crannies better. Few can track baseballs flying toward it with more certainty.Even so, Bregman said he never hesitated on the basepaths. His fly ball bounced off an airline advertisement and below the yellow line it must cross for a home run. It caromed straight to Tigers left fielder Eric Haase, who fired an accurate throw to Ryan Kreidler covering second base.
On Tuesday, the club added fundamental failures to its growing list of concerns. Bregman made one of the team’s two outs on the basepaths. Rookie Corey Julks had the other after he was picked off in the fourth. Starter Framber Valdez threw two wild pitches and catcher Martín Maldonado allowed a passed ball.
