Alex Bregman is still a baseball rat, but becoming a father has helped change his perspective and a stellar stretch at the plate ensued, complete with his trademark dugout poses after home runs.ARLINGTON — Knox Samuel Bregman entered the world on Aug. 1 at 7:08 p.m., around the same time his father had been scheduled to bat third against the Boston Red Sox at Minute Maid Park.
Turning Bregman’s baseball brain off borders on impossible, but Knox’s birthday gave him a rare opportunity. At the behest of his wife, Reagan, Bregman returned to Minute Maid Park on Aug. 2 — two days earlier than the maximum stay on the major league paternity list. Bregman struck a single, worked a walk and began one of the most brilliant months of his career.
“A little bit, yeah,” Bregman said this week. “It’s one of those things where if you get out or go 0-for-4, it’s whatever. You get to go home and see your son, hang out with him, your wife and family. It shows you what really matters in life: loved ones, friends and family. Bregman averaged a 90.9 mph exit velocity in August — harder than all but one month this season. He hit line drives at a higher rate than any other month of his season, too, while producing his lowest ground ball rate since April.
