This race in particular, a period touring-car brawl called the St. Mary's Trophy, stuck out. Its cast of drivers reads like an all-star game roster, if ever racing had such a thing .
The headliners were drawn from disparate disciplines, fueling the intrigue: Romain Dumas , Steve Soper , Jimmie Johnson , Dindo Capello , plus a cast of current Formula E drivers, and others with F1 experience. The grid was stacked, the metal was gorgeous and ferocious in equal measure." and hyperbolic titles in ALL CAPS,"Mind-Blowing Battle" may actually undersell this race.
Stippler in particular was roasting the wheels off his GTA to catch Dumas's Galaxie in the closing moments of the race. Lap after lap, Dumas clicked off perfect corners like a metronome, and built himself a healthy lead. But near the end of the race, his Ford's prodigious weight seemed to fatigue the tires. That emboldened Stippler in the GTA, who was ripping seconds out of Dumas's lead up until the final laps.
It's the type of spectacle we expect from Goodwood, where the talent and artistry of these elite drivers is visible from space . That's why vintage racing, when it's raw and fierce and not jut a polite processional, can be so satisfying to watch. The only member of staff to flip a grain truck on its roof, Kyle Kinard is R&T's senior editor and resident malcontent.
