Large gray clouds of smoke from the fire could be seen for miles as fire companies from as far as Bloomfield and Montclair helped to battle the two raging fires.
North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Chief David Donnarumma said six small businesses on Bergenline Avenue between 60th and 61st streets were lost, another suffered water and smoke damage and a residential building with 11 families was also damaged.
The blaze was initially reported at approximately 4:20 a.m. and it was finally brought under control at approximately 12:30 p.m. Donnarumma said demolition crews were brought in to knock down buildings that were in risk of collapse and that firefighters would be there all day.The blaze in Union City, on Bergenline at 10th Street, displaced 60 people in 17 families, said Nick Bond, a spokesman for North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue. It was first reported at 8:34 a.m.
