Cast members credit the creative team for helping them translate such a beloved movie to the stage, to honor the film while crafting something original to this production

To portray silent-film star Don Lockwood and ambitious young dancer Kathy Selden, neither Anthony Vacio nor Emma Nossal had to brush up on the classic movie musical “Singin’ in the Rain.”

As for Nossal, who’s playing the Debbie Reynolds role at NVA, “I was raised on this film. I grew up dancing at a studio and tap was the first style I really latched on to. My dance teachers showed me ‘Singin’ in the Rain.’ I’ve done many numbers from the movie already.”The film musical written by Adolph Green and Betty Comden, with music by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed, was choreographed by Kelly and director Stanley Donen.

Nossal, like Vacio making her New Village Arts stage debut, says she sees a lot of herself in Kathy Selden. “Not only in just obvious ways, but the more I dug into the script the more I see how career-driven she is. Although she is smitten with Don when she meets him, she’s not going to let that distract her from her goal and her dream. She’s also humble, smart and savvy about the industry. Those are things I’m trying to achieve for myself.
