Curated by Maori Karmael Holmes, 'Terence Nance: Swarm' surveys Nance’s background as a writer, director, actor, and musician, offering visitors an immersive glimpse inside his creative universe.
Nance first gained recognition in 2012 at the Sundance Film Festival, where he screened his directorial debut,a romantic, partially animated film that follows an artist tracing the failure of his past relationships. “Swarm” occupies the museum’s entire ground level, where six video installations show Nance’s work on a loop. On entering the maze-like space, one encounters a long couch and coffee table in front of the first screen—an arrangement that serves both as functional seating and as an evocation of a Black grandmother’s living room.
Throughout his career, the 41-year-old Dallas native has challenged himself to think bigger—and this show, mounted in partnership with BlackStar Projects, a Philadelphia-based organization supporting the work of Black and brown filmmakers, is no exception. (Founded by Holmes, BlackStar Projects is perhaps best known for its annual BlackStar Film Festival, where Nance premiered, 2015. Video, two-channel projection, water, mirror, plants, sound system.
