With one seismic deal, the most dominant team in baseball over the past decade sent a resounding message to the rest of the sport: The road to the World Series still goes through Los Angeles

.

On one of the busiest trade deadlines in recent memory filled with many top players changing teams, the defending-champion Dodgers made the loudest splash on Friday. They acquired three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer and star shortstop Trea Turner from the Washington Nationals, bolstering their roster as they seek their ninth straight division crown.

The move—coupled with a bold counterpunch by the rival San Francisco Giants—sets up the possibility of a frenzied race down the stretch in the ultracompetitive National League West. The Giants, who unexpectedly own the best record in the major leagues, grabbed former MVP Kris Bryant from the Chicago Cubs.

Along with the San Diego Padres, it adds up to three of baseball’s top contenders coming from one 500-mile stretch of the California coast. The winner advances the best-of-five division series, with the threat of the do-or-die wild-card crapshoot looming for the two losers. Plenty of other blockbusters went down Friday, as playoff hopefuls showed no compunction parting with heralded prospects to lure reinforcements in preparation for October. The Chicago White Sox landed elite closer Craig Kimbrel from the Cubs and will pair him with All-Star Liam Hendriks to form a Bullpen of Doom. The New York Mets nabbed infielder Javier Báez from the Cubs as they look to assert their control over the NL East.
