“I understand why it’s being canceled, but as a senior it’s really heartbreaking,” said Furman runner Gabbi Jennings.
When Furman coach Rita Gary arrived at the track on Thursday afternoon, she felt reassured by the community around her. Despite the mounting suspense over the fate of the championship, athletes and coaches continued to train.
While the news of the cancellation followed shortly after they started their pre-meet routine, Gary reassured Jennings that she deserved to be at the championship. “We went from talking to agents and getting ready for a national championship to having her entire senior year canceled in 24 hours,” Gary said.
“No one can take away the fact that you’re at this meet because you’ve earned it. I’m proud of you because no one can take away the fact that you have run fast enough to be on the line at the Olympic Trials,” Gary told Jennings. “If you take nothing else from this experience, it’s that you have to stay ready because you don’t know when your opportunity is going to come or what it’s going to look like.
