After finishing fifth for Americans in the Chicago Marathon, Matt McDonald has big goals for Trials.
was increasing his mileage to around 100 miles per week and adding a second afternoon run twice per week. McDonald and his Atlanta Track Club teammate, Wilkerson Given, were happy but exhausted after setting big PRs in Chicago.After another year of marathon-focused training, when McDonald returned to race CIM in 2018, he shaved four minutes off his PR to finish in“The second time felt better than the first,” McDonald said. “I think I trained better, slept more, and I knew what to expect in the race. The distance wasn’t unfamiliar territory, which made a huge difference mentally and physically.
“Since I was able to do that workout on a hilly route on a humid day, I felt pretty confident that I could hold that pace in Chicago,” McDonald said.McDonald said that one of the biggest things he’s learned as a marathoner is the importance of training for the distance and surface you’ll be running on.
