The robotax debts are deemed to be “on hold”, which means they are extracted from tax refunds and credits. The ATO also assured Jones’s office that it adopted all recommendations made in a critical 2009 ombudsman’s report that laid out how the tax office should communicate with taxpayers when pursuing old debts.

The ombudsman said issues linked to the ATO scheme could have been mitigated if the agency had regard for past lessons.
