Aldermen last week appeared to support an eight-year service agreement for the bins at a total of $795,105 with Big Belly Solar, Inc. of Needham, Mass.
Aurora is looking at a new system of trash and recycling bins for Phillips Park on the city’s East Side. The contract would be for a connected smart waste, solar compacting and recycling system. Aldermen put it on the consent agenda for the Tuesday City Council meeting, meaning it’s likely to pass. According to a company spokesman, Big Belly would provide a three-part, fully-enclosed bin that would hold five times what a normal trash bin does because it includes compacting inside.
The spokesman said the pollution decrease also extends to trucks coming to collect the trash, because they would have to be emptied less. Santana said the 32 staff hours a week it takes currently to handle trash in the park would be reduced to eight hours, “which means 24 hours of staff time can be reallocated” to other tasks. Ald. John Laesch, at large, asked about problems Big Belly has had in Chicago with rodents eating wires in the smart bins, and bins overflowing.
